Just hours ago, the California Supreme Court ruled to uphold the inequitable Proposition 8, which holds marriage in the state as between one man and one woman. The decision allows those same-sex couples who were married between May and October of 2008 to retain their legal status, but bars any future same-sex couples from marriage.
This decision, although respectful to already married couples, is a clear indication that major civil rights battles still need to be fought. The momentum so many saw a positive California ruling to add to our cause is weakened by this anti-gay ruling, so we have to create that momentum nationwide. Join LGBT activists and community members tonight in over 100 cities as we protest this decision and urge our government to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.
In Chicago, we will be meeting at the Center on Halsted (3656 N. Halsted) at 7PM. Let as many people know about the event as possible and compel them to join with us. The broader the turnout at these events, the deeper the impact will be felt. We need to remind this nation that marriage is not a privilege granted to those who fit the male-female configuration; it is a right that belongs to all citizens of the United States without regard to any other status, including sexual orientation. Please help us end discrimination and work towards rightful equality.
